Caution

Avocado

Applies to: Dog · Cat

Persin can affect some species; the pit is a choking/obstruction risk.

Possible symptoms

Vomiting, diarrhoea; obstruction signs if pit swallowed.

What to do

Vet if pit swallowed or large amount eaten.

Why it is a problem

The flesh, skin and leaves of avocado contain persin, which is much more harmful in some species such as birds and rabbits and less so in dogs and cats, but the large stone is a choking and blockage hazard and the fatty flesh can upset the stomach. Guacamole may also contain onion or garlic.

What a vet may do

A vet may check for blockage and treat stomach upset. If the stone was swallowed it is an urgent matter.

How to prevent it

Dispose of the stone and skin where animals cannot reach, and avoid sharing avocado dishes.
