CNS depressant. Small amounts can be serious, especially in small animals.
Possible symptoms
Incoordination, vomiting, respiratory depression, coma.
What to do
Contact emergency veterinary care immediately.
Why it is a problem
Pets are much smaller than people and are far more sensitive to alcohol, which can cause vomiting, disorientation, low body temperature, breathing problems and collapse. It is found not only in drinks but in some raw bread dough, desserts, mouthwash and sanitiser.
What a vet may do
A vet will give supportive care such as fluids, warmth and monitoring. Do not wait to see if it passes.
How to prevent it
Never leave drinks, cocktails or unbaked yeast dough where pets can reach them, and never let anyone give a pet alcohol as a joke.
