Raw yeast dough

Applies to: Dog · Cat

Expands in the stomach and produces alcohol.

Possible symptoms

Bloat, vomiting, incoordination, weakness.

What to do

Urgent vet if dough was eaten. Do not wait.

Why it is a problem

Raw bread dough rises in the warm stomach, which can cause painful bloating and, as yeast ferments, release alcohol that is absorbed into the blood. It can lead to dangerous stomach swelling and intoxication.

What a vet may do

A vet may monitor, induce vomiting if appropriate and provide supportive care. It is an emergency if the stomach looks swollen or your pet appears unwell.

How to prevent it

Prove dough in closed rooms or high places and never leave it on counters within reach.
