Lilies (flowers)

Applies to: Cat

Extremely toxic to cats. Even pollen or vase water can cause acute kidney failure.

Possible symptoms

Vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, no urine.

What to do

Emergency vet immediately. Any exposure is serious.

Why it is a problem

True lilies and daylilies are among the most dangerous plants for cats. Even small amounts, including pollen licked off the fur or water from the vase, can cause acute kidney failure. Early treatment makes a large difference.

What a vet may do

A vet will usually start treatment quickly, often with intravenous fluids and kidney monitoring over days. Do not wait for symptoms.

How to prevent it

Do not bring lilies into homes with cats, and ask florists to leave them out of bouquets sent to you.
