Daily exercise

Orientative daily activity minutes by stage and size, with practical tips. Adjust for health and weather.

Tools with context

Recommended activity / day

30–60 min

General guidance, not a clinical standard: we found no veterinary guideline that sets exact minutes. Adjust to your pet's fitness, age and health, and follow your vet's advice.

  • •Several short walks beat one very long one, especially for puppies and seniors.
  • •Include scent work and mental play — not only running.
  • •In extreme heat or cold, reduce intensity and check paws.

Guides

Activity should adapt to the animal, not the other way around.

The tool suggests orientative daily minutes by life stage and size, but the right amount also depends on health, temperament, weather, fitness and activity type. A pet’s day can be enriched by more than walks alone.

How we frame activity

We use ranges and activity levels to avoid false precision. A young healthy dog may tolerate more intensity than a senior, while a cat may benefit from several short play and exploration sessions spread through the day.

More minutes are not always better

Overloading can cause injury or worsen existing problems. Quality, progression and recovery matter as much as duration.

Turn exercise into a routine

  • Start gradually if your pet has been inactive.
  • Combine movement with sniffing, play, training and mental enrichment.
  • Reduce intensity in extreme heat, cold or when fatigue appears.
  • For lameness, pain, breathing difficulty or exercise intolerance, ask a veterinarian.
