Grapes / raisins

Applies to: Dog

Can cause acute kidney failure in dogs even in small amounts.

Possible symptoms

Vomiting, lethargy, diarrhoea, reduced urine, abdominal pain.

What to do

Emergency vet immediately. Do not wait for symptoms.

Why it is a problem

Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants can cause acute kidney injury in some dogs. The toxic substance is not clearly identified, and the reaction is unpredictable: some dogs eat them with no sign of harm while others become seriously ill after a small amount. Because there is no known safe amount, any ingestion is treated as a risk.

What a vet may do

Vets generally treat suspected ingestion seriously and early, which may include decontamination, intravenous fluids and blood tests to monitor kidney function over several days.

How to prevent it

Keep fruit bowls, trail mix, baked goods with raisins and fruitcake out of reach, and do not use grapes as treats.
