Temperament and daily life
Independent, adaptable and usually good-natured. Domestic shorthairs vary in personality, from affectionate lap cats to more aloof ones, and enjoy play that imitates hunting.
Health to keep an eye on
Generally hardy, with no breed-specific pattern, though weight, dental disease and kidney problems in older age are common in cats generally.
Coat and grooming
Short coat that needs only occasional brushing.
Best suited to
Almost any home. Provide climbing space, scratching posts and play.
General tendencies only: every animal is an individual. Health notes are not a diagnosis; ask your vet about your own pet.
Care notes
Hardy. Indoor cats need enrichment and weight control.
