Calm, easygoing and independent. British Shorthairs are affectionate on their own terms, often prefer sitting beside you to being carried, and tolerate time alone fairly well.
Health to keep an eye on
Commonly associated with weight gain and some heart and kidney conditions in some lines. Measure food and encourage play.
Coat and grooming
Dense plush coat; weekly brushing, more in moulting.
Best suited to
Quiet homes and first-time cat owners.
General tendencies only: every animal is an individual. Health notes are not a diagnosis; ask your vet about your own pet.
Care notes
Indoor cats tend to gain weight.
